Consumption and production drive the global economy, but they also wreak havoc on planetary health through the unsustainable use of resources. One-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally, ammounting to about 1 billion tons per year and generating 8-10% of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, 2.12 billion tons of waste are produced worldwide.
If we continue this trend, the consequences could be dire.
The UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. On a national level, Vietnam is also striving for Zero Hunger by 2025 and Net Zero by 2050, which includes reducing food waste and carbon emissions.
The RMIT alumni community aspires to contribute to this effort through the Sạch Sành Sanh (Clean, Clever, Continuity) campaign. This campaign aims to raise public awareness about food waste and sustainable lifestyles, their impact on greenhouse gas emissions and personal well-being, and how to reduce food waste and embrace a more environment-friendly lifestyle.
