Observations in Da Nang smart and sustainable city

The Managing Smart Transformation Research Group (MST Group) of The Business School, RMIT Vietnam, recently concluded an insightful trip to Da Nang.

This trip included Dr. Oanh Vu, Dr. Quyen Dang, Assoc. Prof. Abel Alonso, and Dr. Santiago Velasquez, as part of their project, “Paving the Way for Vietnam’s Smart and Sustainable City Future” supported by the Research Seed Fund of RMIT APAC Smart and Sustainable Cities Hub. This visit marks an important step in developing actionable policies to enhance smart and sustainable city initiatives in Vietnam.

Through a series of meetings and site visits, the team gained a deeper understanding of Da Nang’s achievements and potential as a leading example of smart and sustainable city development.​

During their first day, the team visited the Da Nang Administrative Center, the Department of Information and Communications, and the Intelligent Operation Center, where they observed how digitalization and advanced technologies are transforming city management. These initiatives, including smart transportation systems that predict and address weather-related disruptions, demonstrate the city’s proactive approach to urban challenges.

Further discussions at the Da Nang Business Support Center revealed growing investments in technology adoption within the local business community. Visits to key private sector organizations, such as a logistics company and the Hai Van Tunnel South, showcased the implementation of cutting-edge technologies to streamline operations and improve efficiencies.

The team also met with creative professionals and educators driving digital transformation. A standout example was a local IT entrepreneur developing inclusive IoT travel booking solutions. Meanwhile, a private educational institution demonstrated innovative approaches to enhance children’s digital skills, and a transportation company highlighted the importance of AI-driven consumer services.​

Complementing these engagements, the team explored sustainable living practices across Da Nang, gaining valuable insights into the city’s infrastructure, buildings, and urban environments.​

This trip laid a strong foundation for future collaboration and further learning about ways to develop smart cities and improve citizens’ quality of life.  ​
