Advancing Sustainable and Smart Construction: Collaborative insights from Vietnam and Australia

On December 3rd, 2024, the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Ho Chi Minh University of Technology (HCMUT) welcomed a collaborative workshop co-hosted with RMIT Post Carbon Research Centre.

This event, supported by the RMIT APAC Smart and Sustainable Cities Hub (SSC Hub) through its mobility fund, aimed to foster connections between researchers at RMIT and other regional partners, enabling researchers to travel between RMIT locations to advance research, training, and engagement activities aligned with the Hub’s mission.​

The workshop brought together academic leaders, researchers, and students from HCMUT and RMIT to explore critical topics in sustainability and climate resilience. Discussions revolved around decarbonization, renewable energy adoption, sustainable construction and design, and innovative recycling practices. ​

Opening remarks from HCMUT leaders and RMIT representatives, including Professor Jago Dodson, co-lead of SSC Hub, emphasized the importance of academic collaboration in addressing Vietnam's sustainability challenges.

The sessions featured insights from experts such as Professor Priya Rajagopalan from RMIT’s Post Carbon Research Centre and Associate Professor Dr. Le Thi Hong Na from HCMUT, who shared innovative approaches to sustainable construction design. Further discussions on smart construction and decarbonization were led by Associate Professor Jonathan Tran of RMIT and Associate Professor Tran Van Mien of HCMUT​.

A dynamic Q&A session provided an opportunity to address the opportunities and challenges of implementing sustainable practices in Vietnam’s construction sector.​

This workshop not only deepened understanding of sustainability but also inspired new partnerships to drive impactful initiatives. As the SSC Hub continues to support mobility and collaborative research, it reinforces the commitment to shaping a sustainable and climate-resilient future.
