Who can apply?

  • The RMIT Vietnam Illuminate Fellowship is open to Vietnamese and international researchers (for Postdoctoral Fellowships) and international researchers (for Professorial Fellowships) who are outstanding in their field and who meet the eligibility and selection criteria.
  • Illuminate Fellowships are not available to RMIT employees with current ongoing academic appointments.
  • To be eligible, you must hold a PhD/Doctorate qualification at the time of applying.
  • Additional eligibility criteria may apply. Please refer to the specific eligibility criteria under each of the Fellowship categories.

Illuminate Fellows foster positive futures by encouraging cutting-edge research that is strategic and impactful. To achieve those goals, Illuminate Fellows focus on strategic research priority themes. These strategic research priorities are key mechanisms for achieving research impact by bringing in fresh expertise and capability in strategically important areas; designed to support outstanding, impact-oriented, and dynamic researchers. The Illuminate Fellowships focus on research themes including Sustainable Development, Smart Cities and Digital Transformation, and Social Innovation.

Contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam, that meets the economic needs of today, without compromising the needs of future generations. This requires interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative solutions to promote sustainable economic, environmental, and social prosperity in Vietnam. 

Contributing to development economics and major industries in Vietnam to ensure economic competitiveness, socio-economic development, infrastructure, smart technologies, and the digital economy. This requires an overall uplift of technological capabilities in digital industries, and the future of digital transformation.

Contributing knowledge and engagement in relation to culture, creativity and society. To understand an individual's lived experience, we must make sense of the communities, cultures and societies in which they live. This requires that we learn from the past to ensure a future in which everyone can thrive. 

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be aligned with one or more of RMIT’s Strategic Research Priority Areas as identified in the 2024 recruitment round. They will be positioned within a school environment but expected to work across disciplines. 

The Postdoctoral Fellowship is an opportunity for emerging researchers to further build their research career supported with research training and mentorship.

The role is expected to plan, lead, develop, and engage in high quality, transdisciplinary, externally linked and impact-focused research projects, which address local, national, regional, and global challenges in line with the University’s Strategic Research Priority areas. The Postdoctoral Fellow will deliver excellent research outcomes with a strong focus on impact and translation. They will carry out research projects, which will make a significant impact in their specialization and be influential in expanding the knowledge of their relevant discipline.  

The Postdoctoral Fellow will embed their research expertise into the life of their School, through the development of high-quality, productivity-driven research networks across RMIT and with local and national, internal, and external partners. They will be expected to engage in high-quality research projects and produce high quality outputs and be willing to explore interdisciplinary research opportunities that create value.   

The position may be expected to contribute towards limited teaching duties, e.g. Guest lectures in relevant areas, but will not run coursework.

The position is open to candidates who have completed a Ph.D. within five years (or equivalent if career interruptions apply) prior to the application starting date and who do not currently hold a continuing academic appointment with RMIT University.

The Professorial role will be aligned with one or more of RMIT’s Strategic Research Priority Areas as identified in the 2024 recruitment round. They will be positioned within a school environment but expected to work across disciplines.  They will be an eminent researcher, contributing significantly to research outputs and translation, industry and public engagement, building capability of staff, promoting strong research performance, and above all – engaging in research which builds social, environmental and economic benefit and positive change in the world.  

They will provide high-level transdisciplinary, externally linked and impact-focused research leadership and develop and lead research project teams and programs and foster a vibrant research culture.

They are required to develop a high-quality and productivity-driven research network across RMIT and with external national and global partners.   They will make a significant contribution to planning and strategic direction, taking on major academic leadership roles involving participation in committees, networks, projects and alliances within their School, College, the University and with industry, community, government, advocacy, arts, NGO, health, or other bodies external to the University, as appropriate. 

The position will be expected to attract external research funding including competitive grants from both national and international sources and produce high-quality outputs.

Stage 1 - Submit your application

Applications can be submitted via Workday and are open from Wednesday, 20th March and close at 11:59 PM ICT on Sunday, 21st April 2024. Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted.

You will be asked to provide responses to questions on the Application Form (including research outputs and achievements in your research career) and a current Curriculum Vitae. The general questions will help you to provide details describing one of your research highlights that has made the most significant impact and why. We are looking for outstanding communication skills; your answer must be succinct.

Stage 2 – Interview

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview which may include a presentation to the selection panel. It is anticipated that interviews will take place in June/July 2024.

Stage 3 – Reference checks and offers

All selected candidates will be asked to provide details of their referee so that reference checks can be undertaken prior to an offer; reference checks and offers will occur from August 2024.

We are recruiting Postdoctoral Fellows and Professorial Fellows whose experience and expertise align with one of our strategic research priority themes.  Current RMIT staff are not eligible to apply.

To be eligible for a Postdoctoral Fellowship your PhD must have been awarded in the previous 5 years before the application starting date. This means have an award of PhD date on or before March 2020.

Yes, you can apply for an RMIT Vietnam Fellowship while you hold a research fellowship at another institution. Please ensure that any other fellowships you hold are listed in your CV as part of your application.

No, you cannot apply for more than one fellowship at a time. You should establish which Fellowship category is most suited to you, given the eligibility criteria in the position descriptions for each category, as well as your skills and experience and apply for that fellowship.

Successful candidates will need to be located in Vietnam.

Include all funding where you were a named investigator (in any investigator role, not just as lead). You should not include funding where you were hired onto a project (e.g., as a research assistant), only include funding where you were part of the research team that received the funding.

We are expecting successful candidates to commence their Fellowship by December 2024 – January 2025.

There is no need to contact anyone or do anything outside of the application process. Stage 1 of the process is an application round and will cover your eligibility, research outputs and achievements, career, and any career interruptions. If you are selected to go to stage 2 of the process, this is where you will join an interview with the Fellowship Panel.

  • Candidates must provide a valid IELTS (academic) 7.0 with no score less than 6.5 (or equivalence) while applying to RMIT Vietnam. However, you may wish to submit once confirmed as a preferred candidate after interview.
  • Candidates who can evidence their completion of PhD whilst being instructed through the medium of English, supported by experience of teaching in and English-speaking environment for the past 24 months are exempted from providing English certificates.

You may apply, but your PhD must be awarded by the time interviews are offered (approximately May). Shortlisted candidates must be able to demonstrate they have met all the requirements for completion of their PhD program, be able to adopt the title of Doctor, and be able to produce a statement of academic completion upon request before an interview is offered.
