Australian Senate President visits RMIT Vietnam, Saigon South campus

As part of an official visit to Vietnam in late August, President of the Australian Senate the Honourable Sue Lines, together with a delegation of Senators and Members of Parliament, toured RMIT Vietnam’s Saigon South campus in Ho Chi Minh City.

The visit was an important occasion to highlight RMIT University’s substantial involvement in Vietnam, demonstrating the broader educational and commercial ties between Australia and Vietnam.

On behalf of RMIT Vietnam, Acting Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of The Business School Professor Robert McClelland was pleased to welcome the Honourable Sue Lines. 

“RMIT has been embedded in the local fabric of Vietnam for more than two decades as the first fully foreign-owned international university in country, contributing to the region’s social and economic priorities,” Professor McClelland said.

“We are proud of our well-established campuses in Vietnam that are lively hubs of study and community engagement for more than 12,000 active students, 22,500 alumni and 1,300 staff.  

“RMIT is committed to investing in Vietnam for the long-term to support the nation’s goal of being a high-income country by 2045.

“Our greatest ambition is to graduate truly global citizens who are cross-cultural ambassadors ready to make a difference in Vietnam and across the world.”

RMIT Vietnam’s Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor Engagement, Ms Jodie Altan gave an overview of RMIT’s impact in Vietnam as an exemplar of transnational education and the opportunities that it creates for Australia. This includes the University’s global presence, it’s rich mix of local and international students, its academic portfolio and commitment to Vietnam.

Senator Lines commented on the vibrancy of the campus and the international atmosphere. She reflected on the power of Australian education to transform lives and communities in Vietnam and expressed pride in RMIT’s contribution to the country.

She said: "RMIT is a well-respected and long-established campus in Vietnam.

"RMIT is a significant contributor to the pool of talented Australian alumni in Vietnam that I have had the opportunity to speak to during this visit. The absolute respect and joy for their time spent in Australian institutions, and their enthusiasm for an Australian education is very clear. The success these alumni and students are creating for themselves and for Vietnam, is truly transformational".
