Learning and teaching approaches

At RMIT, education goes beyond simply earning a degree. The University prepares students for a rapidly changing world by emphasising adaptability, innovation, and lifelong learning. Its student-centred approach focuses on practical, hands-on learning and collaboration, preparing graduates to be leaders and innovators in their fields. And it is recognised that active learning is key to academic and social success.

Comprehensive student support services

Speakers at the first panel discussion highlighted RMIT’s comprehensive support system, including learning support, library services, career services, wellbeing resources, and diverse student activities. These services ensure students fully experience university life and can actively seek help when needed.

New students are supported through the Orientation Week and related activities to help them access all necessary information, make friends and adjust to the new environment. Students can visit the New Students webpage or contact Student Connect.

As students embark on this new chapter, university life brings both opportunities and challenges. This transition affects not only students but also families, as their role evolves. Following this, the second panel discussion focused on the fundamental development in young adults and how parents can maintain effective communication and support to students during their transition to university.

Effective communication between parents and students is crucial during the transition to university. The panellists suggest creating a supportive environment with positive feedback and calm responses. Active listening without judgement and shared activities helps students feel comfortable sharing their experiences.

Parents should also give students space to develop independence. University provides opportunities for self-reliance, decision-making, and learning from successes and challenges, preparing students for future life and work.

Mr Vu Hoai Giang, a parent joining the event, shared his thoughts: “The event was eye-opening. It made me realise the importance of adjusting my approach when guiding my child. Previously, I was quite imposing, but now I understand the need for a more balanced approach.”
