RMIT Vice-Chancellor’s Scholar continues her environmental mission

RMIT Vice-Chancellor's Scholar Bui Xuan Thu is determined to continue her mission to build a sustainable environment during her time at the university.

Growing up in Binh Thuan province, where titanium overmining is now seen as hindering the local economic development, Thu has had a strong desire to find sustainable ways to protect the environmental wellbeing and people’s lives.

Thu described herself as an “avid environmental activist” while she engaged in many province-wide projects to build a lasting impact on her hometown.

Being one of the founding members of the first student-led organisation in Binh Thuan called Let’s Do It Binhthuan, Thu and her group organised many environmental activities in the province.

“We organised a series of environmental workshops and weekly clean-up activities at beaches.

“The province-wide World Cleanup Day 2019 event attracted more than 200 student volunteers and local residents joining hands in cleaning up rubbish at beaches,” Thu said.

Following the success of the clean-up event, the proactive leader continued taking up her group to host the Draw for the Environment exhibition and the Green Market Fair with the attendance of 500 people to promote green environment.

Thu’s team also delivered recycling workshops to teach primary students in a school for underprivileged children how to turn used bottles into beautiful plant vases.

When talking about the challenges in balancing study and community activities, Thu said with a smile that the biggest obstacles are how to keep sustainable living at the forefront of people’s minds, educate people and spread the word to help protect nature.

During the past two years of leading the content production and promotional activities, Thu utilised online platforms to raise awareness of local environmental issues and community campaigns to the public.

Thu believes she will be able to pursue her environmental goals when studying at RMIT through participating in different projects including becoming a member of RMIT Green Generation club, clean-up campaigns, and environmental lessons.

Being one of the seven RMIT’s Vice-Chancellor's Scholars this year, the Digital Business student said this opportunity will allow her to pursue her passion for making sustainable development a reality in Binh Thuan and other places in Vietnam.

“Building core competencies and ethical leadership of future business executives in the current digital world, the program will provide me a thorough glimpse into how I can avert further sufferings, which were inflicted by the conflicts of profit, to the lives of the people in my hometown and beyond,” Thu said.

“I hope for a brighter future – a future where economic development is in parallel with environmental protection,” she concluded.

RMIT Vice-Chancellor’s Scholars are awarded on merit, and take into account past academic performance, passion for success, creativity, engagement with community involvement and future leadership potential.
