The concept of a single package serving multiple functions inspired the design by team Ulagod formed of Quyen and Duy.

“When we first saw a sneaker box which could be transformed into a sneaker holder after it had been unboxed, we thought it was so cool and convenient,” Ulagod team member Tran Tong Le Quyen shared.

“It’s inspired us to look at a packaging design that can replace existing wasteful/non-biodegradable materials, uses less material to produce, and promotes recycling [their chosen category’s requirements].”

From their observation, the duo realised that while purchasing an item, users normally get a function they don’t expect which comes together with the packaging.

They conducted a brief survey to better understand how users react if the box has additional function that is useful for their daily life.

“The answer was that users appreciate if the box has more functions than just simply protects the item,” Quyen said.

Such findings reinforced the team’s aspiration and helped them confidently move forward with their idea to upgrade the original function of mobile phone packaging which can now easily be converted into a phone stand or pen holder, or even a picture frame stand.

The duo was honoured and proud when their efforts and meticulousness in each stage paid off and was announced as the competition's top awardees.

“The pandemic posed a huge challenge for us during the competition,” Quyen recalled.

“Duy had to make the prototype and manage video production by himself, while I edited the video and prepared for the final presentation separately.”

Taking the experimentation and improvement as the starting points of their work, the duo didn’t hesitate and jumped at the chance when the opportunity arose.

“The competition provided us hands-on experience in the field which serves our enthusiasm and passion for branding and packaging design.”

The theme “Enhance Your Creativity”, SCGP Packaging Design Challenge Vietnam 2021 encourages university students who have passion for design to think out of the box, push boundaries in packaging designs, and win prizes valuing a total of VND 120 million.

Team Ulagod was among the nine winning teams who won over 87 ideas of 118 contestants from 16 universities across the country.
