RMIT strengthens global standing

RMIT has improved its position in the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject, with nine subject areas ranked in the top 100 – two more than last year.

For the third year in a row, Art and Design at RMIT is ranked in the top 20 worldwide – 17th globally and number one in the Asia-Pacific region.

RMIT continued its strong showing in Architecture and the Built Environment, rising eight places to 28th in the world.

Computer Science and Information Systems at RMIT regained its top 100 ranking, joining Engineering – Civil and Structural, Engineering – Electrical and Electronic, Communication and Media Studies, Education, Business and Management Studies, and Development Studies.

Across the entire subject area of Engineering and Technology, RMIT ranked 92nd in the world.

To compile these rankings, QS evaluated 4438 universities, qualified 3098 and ranked 1117 institutions in total.

More than 127 million citations attributions were analysed, with QS verifying the provision of over 18,900 programs.

RMIT is now ranked among the world’s top universities in 23 of 38 assessed subjects (and all five faculty areas) featured in this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject.

In 2016, RMIT was ranked in 20 subject areas and, in 2015, 18.

Professor Belinda Tynan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education and Vice-President, said the results were a tribute to the dedication and excellence of RMIT’s academic staff.

“It’s wonderful to see the work of RMIT staff gaining such deserved recognition.

“These results are a combination of feedback from academics and employers worldwide, and an assessment of academic impact, as measured by citations.

“They confirm RMIT’s standing as a global university of technology, design and enterprise.

“Our students can be confident that they are being supported by excellent academics as RMIT gets them ready for life and work.”
