RMIT Vietnam’s Academic Building 2 wins energy efficiency award

RMIT Vietnam’s Academic Building 2 (AB2) has won second prize at the 9th Energy Efficiency Building Awards in the category ‘Current New Building’.

Nearly 100 nominated projects were judged on architectural design, energy savings, design of energy systems using lighting and air conditioning, environmental impact, and other factors.

Officially opened in 2013 at the University’s Saigon South campus, AB2 was constructed to minimise the impact on the environment by taking advantage of natural light, ventilation and sustainable materials.

The building, which meets Australian five-star ‘green building’ standards, reflects the same ethos as the University's other landmark buildings in Australia. The striking interior design incorporates the latest in teaching and learning technology and artwork from many local artists.

Able to accommodate up to 1,100 students within its 14,400 square metres over six levels, AB2 doubled the teaching space at Saigon South campus when it first opened.

AB2 was also named a winner in the High Quality Construction Awards held by Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction in 2014.

During the past 15 years in Vietnam, the University has placed a great deal of emphasis on contributing to the protection of Vietnam’s environmental future. In addition to providing student facilities that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient, RMIT Vietnam incorporates environmental sustainability in its curriculum where appropriate, and engages its students in green campaigns such as community clean up days.

The Energy Efficiency Building Awards, organised by the Energy Conservation Center Ho Chi Minh City under the direction of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, was held in Ho Chi Minh City on 30 September 2016.
