RMIT Students Spread Green Message

RMIT Students Spread Green Message

Adopting the slogan “One little seed can generate a whole forest”, students from RMIT Vietnam’s Green Generation Club have put on a series of environmental activities on campus and in the community.

Established in June 2013, the club aims to raise awareness and change attitudes around keeping a green, clean and beautiful environment not only in Ho Chi Minh City, but across the country. Over the last three years, this has been done through developing and spreading their love of the environment with young people via a series of simple, planned activities.

The club’s recent “Green Action” campaign lasted more than one month and is the club’s key annual activity, including a Green Fair, a second-hand Flea Market, and Green Lessons.

The Green Fair took place at Hoa Lu Stadium in District 1 and included 14 booths and a mini canteen for parents. The event attracted more than 300 primary school students from District 1, 10 and Binh Thanh, with participants enjoying a fun and educational day with the opportunity to apply their acquired environmental knowledge on real world problems.

The club’s second-hand Flea Market was held at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities in early November, adopting the motto “old to others, new to me”. This event encouraged the community to reuse discarded or unused objects, and hoped to inspire young people to spread the green action message to others. Owners of all 20 booths at the market contributed 10-to-15 per cent of their profits to sponsor the ongoing activities of the Green Generation Club.

This year’s series of green lessons focused on the topic of “Saving Water” and were particularly targeted at children from five to ten years old at kindergarten and primary schools across Ho Chi Minh City. The lessons were delivered in a lively fashion and included lots of games and interactivity so participants would remember the message and understand the importance of water, then spread the green action of protecting the precious resource.
